In the summer of 1982, Jean-Claude Suaudeau, a former Nantes legend of the 1960s, took over the reins of his former club after nine years at the helm of the club's youth sections. It would be an inspired appointment, Suaudeau having been responsible for bringing many of the talented first-team members into the club in the first place. Nantes comfortably won the Division 1 title with the most prolific attack and toughest defence in the division. The big names in defence such as Maxine Bossis, William Ayache and Patrice Rio made Nantes a formidable opponent, while Loïc Amisse and Bruno Baronchelli and attacking midfielder Jose Toure went wild at the other end of the pitch. Yugoslavia striker Vahid Halihodžic, who scored 27 goals in 36 appearances to become Division 1's top scorer, was the main threat.
